Barloworld Social Innovation Youth Awards

Emerging young entrepreneurs demonstrate entrepreneurial action to improve livelihoods in economically, socially and environmentally sustainable ways

The Barloworld Social Innovation Youth Awards 2017 (BSIYA) has entered its second phase with the announcement of eight finalist teams. Each team has demonstrated its commitment to using the power of entrepreneurial action to transform lives and shape a better and more sustainable world through social innovation in their communities.

Barloworld, in partnership with entrepreneurial development NGO Enactus South Africa, designed the BSIYA awards to recognise the vital role that youth plays in social innovation, and specifically the Enactus youth leaders. “Through Enactus we aim to encourage more responsible leadership and believe a team-based model where everyone works together towards the same goal is key to success. Entrepreneurial action is a powerful force for good when utilized properly and is something we are all capable of. Enactus South Africa is aiming to unleash the entrepreneurial spirit of our members so that together, we can enable real progress and empower our communities.” says Chief Executive Officer and Country Director for Enactus South Africa, Letitia De Wet.

Says Mr. Sibani Mngomezulu, Group Executive of Corporate Affairs at Barloworld Ltd: “Through BSIYA we are taking responsive action to address some of the socio-economic needs of South Africa. We see huge value in supporting initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation amongst our youth.”

The eight teams selected include:
Durban University of Technology - Chibini Linen
Mangosuthu University of Technology - Ceiling-in-a-Can

The eight Enactus finalist teams will then present to a panel of judges on 30 June 2017 on their respective projects. “Each project has been identified as having effected positive social change and/or improved the quality of life within a community,” explains Mr Mngomezulu

Part of the judging criteria is to display their ability to:

  • Highlight the socio-economic challenges or opportunities that were addressed by their organisation or business’ innovative application, product or service;
  • Present a business model that supports their application, product or service;
  • Showcase how their application, product or service is meaningful, measurable and effective in creating sustainable positive change for disadvantaged and rural communities
