Mandela Day 2017
Commemorating Mandela Day, Barloworld contributes to Stop Hunger Now’s Global Fight Against Chronic Hunger
In commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day (18 July), Barloworld employees joined Stop Hunger Now volunteers to pack meals for needy beneficiaries. Each team packed a total of 15 boxes.
For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity — as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. He believed that everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better, and Mandela Day is an occasion for everyone to take action and inspire change.
Barloworld is committed to contributing significant time and resources to promoting the education, health, welfare and economic stability of the communities in which we operate. We encourage all employees to participate in community activities during July that promote the common good. We believe that our success should also contribute to the quality of life in, and the prosperity and sustainability of, communities where we work and live
Barloworld have partnered with Stop Hunger Now SA, for the past three years, with the goal of making a difference in the lives of those who are in desperate need of access to decent nutrition.
A “human production line” consisting of 20 people, participating at a meal packing event can pack up to 5000 meals in two hours. The meals consist of rice, soya, a mix of dehydrated vegetables and a nutrient sachet containing a hearty 23 vitamins and minerals.
On Friday morning, Barloworld, managed to pack a total of 84 240 meals.
The packaged meals will be distributed across the country to needy communities identified by Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa, a volunteer based meal packaging programme that was started in 2009.
For team Barloworld, the experience to be part of this far-reaching initiative that continues to have such great impact in people’s lives and giving them hope in their time of need was an honour.
Aligned with Nelson Mandela’s values and his dedication to the service of humanity, in the fields of conflict resolution, race relations, the promotion and protection of human rights, reconciliation, gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, as well as the fight against poverty and the promotion of social justice, Barloworld salutes the efforts of Stop Hunger Now SA and all the members of the public who came together to help the fight against hunger.
